ABOUT US >

who we are.....

The Nigerian blindness and visual impairment survey (2005-2007) put the estimated cause of severe visual impairment and blindness from cataract at 45.3% and 43.0% respectively, making it the most common form of visual impairment and blindness. Uncorrected refractive errors was the commonest cause of mild and moderate visual impairment (77.9% and 57.1%).

By the year 2020, the number of people with operable cataracts will have increased from over 400,000 to over 600,000 (a 43% increase) provided the incidence of cataract remains the same - which it wouldn't - meaning the cataract burden is increasing.

Refractive errors continue to rob school-aged children of the chance to maximize their potential due to poor vision. Most children dread school because their teachers and parents do not understand that their fear for school or inability to "follow" stems from an inability to properly see what is being taught or going on around them.

The VisionShield Foundation for Eye Care is passionate about reducing the burden of preventable eye diseases notably cataract and refractive errors in adults and children respectively.

At VisionShield we are reducing the burden of preventable blindness from cataract and uncorrected refractive errors one individual at a time by strict adherence to our creed.
